Each local anaesthetic drug has a comment section at its end, which discusses the history, availability, its use, and various clinical applications.
The second section consists of five chapters on equipment used by dentists during the performance of local anaesthetic techniques. The author has used boxes to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each type of syringe, which will be of benefit to students preparing for their exams and has summarized the recommendations at the end of each chapter.
The fifth chapter in this section uses a series of photographs to demonstrate the correct method of loading cartridges onto the syringe systems. The third section is the largest section in the book, divided into seven chapters covering detailed preoperative physical and psychological evaluation of the dental patient and the local anaesthetic injection techniques.
The chapters of perhaps the greatest relevance to dentists are the ones detailing the various techniques of maxillary and mandibular anaesthesia.
The photographs, along with line diagrams and the methodical description of each nerve block, are the highlights of this edition. Advanced Search This sixth edition of Handbook of Local Anesthesia is targeted mainly towards dentists, oral hygienists, and dental students and not only covers the topic in great detail, but also highlights and discusses the latest advances in techniques such as periodontal ligament injections and C-CLAD system computer-controlled local anaesthetic delivery system.
The author and contributors are from the USA as reflected by the pictures of commercial preparations of drugs and the reprinted documents used in various North American university departments. The book is entitled as a handbook, although it is in fact a large paperback textbook containing over pages, and is therefore not easily portable.
We found the book to be well written and the accompanying full-size colour photographs and abundance of diagrams and tables make the text easy to understand. There are also extensive lists of peer-reviewed references at the end of each chapter for further detailed reading.
It is divided into four sections covering a range of subjects from basic fundamental concepts to the latest advances in the field of dental anaesthesia and is supplemented by a new extra DVD in addition to the two DVD set which accompanied the fifth edition.
The first section is divided into four chapters covering neurophysiology and the clinical pharmacology of local anaesthetics.
It is a handbook, but it is also so much more. Are you seeking to learn?
Do you need a refresher? Are you unsure about a term?
Are you attempting a new approach? Look it up in Malamed!.
A companion DVD, Local Anesthesia Administration DVD , reviews both local anesthetic technique and animation that clarifies basic anatomy and pharmacology and is a valuable addition that complements the text. The production is slick, professional, and—though not my taste in music—upbeat. At best, it is a difficult task to describe clinical technique; a picture, and especially a video, is worth more than a thousand words.
The basics of maxillary and mandibular injections are clearly demonstrated with great clarity and focus. My only criticism is that the practicing dentist needs more than a basic review, and troubleshooting the different approaches with various anatomical variations would be helpful.
It is difficult to be all things to all people and to span audiences from dental students to dental hygienists and from specialty graduate students to experienced practitioners. It is a daunting and formidable undertaking.
Personally, I liked the book better than the movie for its depth and completeness, but, taken together, they are the reference in dental local anesthesia and will continue to set the standard.I refuse to believe that I am growing older. The Needle 7.
Are you attempting a new approach? This new edition of Handbook of Local Anesthesia is well written and reasonably priced, and should prove a welcome update to the collection for dental students and practitioners.
